The Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers have been on strike in India's Kerala state for the last seven days. They are demanding rise in honorarium and retirement benefits. Kate Lappin, regional Secretary of PSI Asia-Pacific, has written to the state's Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, showing solidarity with the workers and asking him to give global leadership in ensuring decent work for the all-women's health workforce.

Following are the demands of the striking workers:

  • Increase the monthly honorarium to INR 21,000

  • Ensure regular payment of honorarium to be credited by 5th of every month

  • Provide INR 5,00,000 as retirement benefit to workers over 62 years

  • Ensure that all workers receive pension benefits
