PSI unions in the Andean region reject violence by Immigration Police in the U.S.

Jan 22, 2026

PSI members in the Andean countries expressed their solidarity with Renee Good's family, with the affected migrant communities and with all those involved in legal observation and human rights work.

Statement rejecting ICE violence in Minneapolis

On January 7, 2026, in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted an operation during which volunteer legal observer Renee Good was shot multiple times, resulting in her death. Renee Good was a U.S. citizen, a 37-year-old mother, and was involved in legal observation work related to the defense of the rights of migrant communities.

We express our solidarity with Renee Good's family, with the affected migrant communities and with all those involved in legal observation and human rights defense.

This event occurs in a context of profound transformations in the public policies of the current Donald Trump administration in the United States, characterized by the weakening and attack on public services, the advancement of privatization processes, the reallocation of public resources towards militarization and the tightening of immigration control policies, with direct impacts on working and migrant communities.

The violence associated with these internal policies is part of a broader framework of external actions, including the military intervention in Venezuela, which took place on January 3, 2026, a fact that constitutes a serious concern for the peoples of Latin America due to its impact on sovereignty, self-determination and peace in the region.

We warn that internal policies of repression and external military actions are part of the same scenario that affects communities, weakens organized popular power, threatens democracy and strains the exercise of trade union rights, both in the United States and in our region.

We express our solidarity with the workers of the United States who, from their trade union and social organizations, resist these policies and defend public services, labor rights and human dignity. Likewise, we reiterate our solidarity with workers throughout the Americas who are mobilizing in defense of the sovereignty of our peoples and the right to freely decide their destiny. We stand in solidarity with our fellow PSI affiliates in Minnesota who are organizing mobilizations against this attack, including this Friday, January 23 in New York.
