Mexican Trade Unions for the Elimination of Violence against Women

The transformation of patriarchal structures and relations in trade union life and in society, the conquest of the international trade union movement for the world of work of the right to be free of violence and harassment, including gender violence and harassment; as well as the transforming role of public services for the elimination of feminicide as a scourge of humanity, were the programmatic axes of the activities developed on November 22 and 23 by the National Union of Social Security Workers (SNTSS) and on November 24 and 25 by the Union of Workers of the Judiciary of Yucatan (STPJY).

This day was also an opportunity to highlight two victories achieved through the exercise of workers' collective rights. The first was the inclusion in the text of the new SNTSS collective bargaining agreement of clauses to address violence and harassment in the workplace, integrate their prevention and protection into health and safety mechanisms, develop a comprehensive treatment protocol with the employer, and include the guarantee of paid union leave for victims of domestic violence. The second, the process of preparation of a strike declaration due to the lack of compliance with the collective bargaining agreements by the administration of the Judicial Branch of Yucatan, which reached a resolution after the signing of a compliance agreement.

The collective strength of workers and women has been the keynote of this day and the impetus for national coordination of PSI in Mexico led by STUAM/SNTSS/STPJY to continue the work for gender equality and take action to demand that the Mexican government include the actions, proposals and concerns of unions and public service workers in its reports on the implementation of ILO Convention 190.
