Following a very close general election last December 2022, Sitiveni Rabuka became the 12th prime minister of Fiji. Rabuka’s People’s Alliance Party formed a majority coalition with two other smaller parties. His election ended the 16-year rule of the Bainimarama administration who had seized power in a 2006 coup. Bainimarama’s leadership had repressed trade unions and civil society more generally.
Unions are optimistic with the newly-seated Rabuka administration as it promised to engage proactively with unions and take actions to:
Revive tripartite forum and revise laws governing unions,
Undertake municipal elections,
Abolish short term contracts for civil servants, and
Effect the retirement age to 60 years across the public service.
