Mesa City Council Approves Contract With Controversial Private Prison Operator CoreCivic

Despite massive public opposition, the Mesa City Council in Arizona voted in favor of privatizing the city’s jail operations and shipping out low-level offenders to a for-profit prison. “The city will enter into a contract with CoreCivic, formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America, which rebranded itself last fall amid numerous allegations of sexual abuse and violence inside its prisons and jails.”
