Tunisia : General strike due to negotiations deadlock

May 20, 2016

On 19 May, health workers in Tunisia, members of PSI affiliate Fédération Générale de la Santé (FGS), organised a general strike in all the country’s hospitals (general, regional and teaching hospitals) following the deadlock in negotiations between the union and the Tunisian Health Ministry.

The Health Minister refuses to negotiate with the union on the subject of agreements already reached in 2012. Budget cuts have also resulted in a situation where public services can no longer function efficiently.

The Ministry has also started legal action against union officials who protested against the nomination of a military officer was named as manager of a large hospital on 4 September 2015.

PSI’s Tunisian affiliates have informed PSI of this situation and request affiliates to send support letters as well as protest letters to the government.

PSI wrote a first letter to the government on 10 March, but has not received a reply.

PSI:

  • is opposed to the appointment of a military officer to manage health organisation;

  • calls for the respect of the agreement reached in 2012 between the FGS, the Health Ministry and the Social Affairs Ministry;

  • denounces the trade union rights violations.

Please send a protest letter to the Tunisian government :

  • M. Habib Essid, Head of Government, TUNISIA - Fax : +216 71 572707

  • M. Saïd Aïdi, Health Minister, TUNISIA - Fax : +216 71 562701

Please send a copy of your letter to Fédération Générale de la Santé : Fax: +216 71 780582 and to [email protected].
